The Global Health Conference (GHC) is one of our the Australian Medical Student Association’s (AMSA) biggest events and draws in approximately 400 delegates annually. Our speakers have included Nobel Prize laureates, politicians, pioneering public health professionals, and famous Australians of the Year, in medicine and beyond.

2024 is the Inception of your journey into global health, right here in Adelaide. Three days of inspiring academic sessions, one day of hands-on festival activities and social events every night. Here you can join likeminded medical students from all around Australia for an unforgettable week of engaging learning and broad networking.

Its time for Inception.

And that is a wrap on all the Academic Sessions of the Global Health Conference 2024 👏. A question that was asked during Dr. Sanjay Adusumilli’s plenary speech today was: “Why do you choose to talk about your experience in Gaza even though it’s so difficult?” He replied with a quote from his colleague he met in Oxford while he was working there which we will not forget, “You may be able to save hundreds of patients, but by telling your story, you may be able to save thousands.” Thank you so much to all the guest speakers, delegates and GHC24 Academics portfolio team members for making these last 3 days of academics so worthwhile.

Meet Dr. David Toro Tole (he/him): A general surgery and urology registrar based in Darwin, Northern Territory. He has extensive experience working in various locations, including Darwin, Katherine, and Nhulunbuy in Arnhem Land, and is dedicated to delivering healthcare to communities throughout the Top End. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Toro Tole is a passionate advocate for LGBTQIA+SB rights, with a particular focus on ensuring equitable access to healthcare services and resources for LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly those living in rural and remote areas. He currently serves as Chair and Director of Top End Pride NT Incorporated, a not-for-profit organisation committed to celebrating and supporting LGBTQIA+SB individuals and families in the region. Dr. Toro Tole previously served as Vice Chair of Top End Pride and was a key member of the LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee at NT Health between 2022-2023. His work with these organisations has been crucial in developing essential referral pathways, enhancing accessible and queer-safe infrastructure, and promoting greater consumer engagement. Meet Dr. Maria Paul: A senior Rehabilitation Physician and Head of Unit of the South Australian Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service (SABIRS). She works at Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN). She has previously held the roles of Chairperson of State-wide Rehabilitation Clinical Network and CALHN Director of Rehabilitation. Having worked in India and National Health Service U.K, before settling in Australia, she brings a wealth of experience regarding healthcare delivery in various settings. Meet Rachael Hudson: A Senior Nurse at FBW Gynaecology Plus and Desert Flower South Australia, Rachael’s nursing career began 25 years ago, starting in the High Dependency Unit at the QEH. Her move into the area of Women’s Health was serendipitous, following a three month contract which led to her working for the Pregnancy Advisory Centre for many years, before moving to FMC. Whilst at FMC, Rachael worked in a similar capacity and commenced working in the Women’s Outpatient Clinic. This experience allowed her to see a different narrative around women’s health and resulted in her completing a post-graduate certificate in, ‘Continence Promotion and Management.’ This in turn paved the way for Rachael’s move to FBW Gynaecology Plus and Desert Flower Centre South Australia, where she has been for the past five years. This is a role she enjoys due to her involvement in patient education around removing taboos from women’s health. Rachael’s professional areas of interest embrace, pelvic floor dysfunction, including pelvic organ prolapse (POP), pessary care and management, incontinence/urodynamics, patient education and supporting the recovery of patients who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM). Meet Michael Crisci: An Occupational Therapist in private practice for over 10 years. Having a background in Social Science and Health Science, with an Honours in Anatomy, he undertook a Masters in OT with the aim to work with children and adolescents. Michael has been with the OTFC Group since 2014 working with neurodiverse children before taking the role as Clinical Lead at OTFC Plus Mile End in 2018 with a focus on supporting teenagers and adolescents. Michael has worked on Neuroaffirming Social Skills and Life Skills programs, is Certified in Ayres Sensory Integration, the AMPS and is an OTA MH Endorsed OT. Michael has presented at the International Mental Health Conference and is a Committee Member of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Conference. She currently works for SAMESH (a joint program of SHINE SA & Thorne Harbour Health), delivering workforce & community education, information services, and social media. She also has a background as a medical librarian and has worked in health/medical libraries since the 90s. Janiece has a passion for connecting people with information, for public health, and social justice, and all these inform their work practice. Meet Dr. Vienna Tran: A registrar with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), undertaking her Diploma of Rural Generalist Anaesthetics. Growing up in suburban Adelaide, Vienna became fascinated with the light-polluted night sky visible from her backyard. When she discovered that she could combine her passion for space with her medical degree, she went on to research the effect of artificial gravity on the hip muscles during prolonged bed rest, for which she earned First Class Honours as part of an international team. She has worked for the Australian Space Agency to help develop the first Applied Space Medicine and Life Sciences roadmap. In 2023 she became a #1 bestselling author on Amazon after writing a deck of cards, “The Solar System”. Meet Dr. Ishani Kaluthotage: A rural GP passionate about global health and has extensive volunteer experience in health promotion, human trafficking and sustainable development projects in Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, Tanzania, and Papua New Guinea. She has developed a strong relationship with Papua New Guinea as a volunteer doctor and as a medical educator. In Australia she has worked in remote Indigenous communities in Queensland, East Arnhem Lands, and the Far North and West regions of South Australia. She currently works for Royal Flying Doctors Service, Refugee Health Service and rural Emergency Departments.
